Manual metal arc welding (MMA welding), also referred to as stick welding, is a reliable and well recognised welding method. Contrastingly to other welding processes,  a filler rod serves as the welding electrode and shortens continuously as the welding progresses. As the end of the electrode rod meets the workpiece a high-temperature electric arc is created and a weld bead forms as a result.

SMAW / Stick Welder FAQ’s

What can you use an MMA welder for?

Stick welders can be used in almost all conditions making it a popular welding method. It is commonly used in outdoor environments, for example, power plant pipelines sites, shipbuilding sites and aviation sites. However, it can also be used for underwater welding environments making it highly versatile.

What equipment is required for manual metal arc welding?

  1. An electrode/ filler rod
  2. An electrode holder
  3. Work cable and clamp
  4. Power supply
  5. Metals to join.

What are the types of MMA welding machines?

Stick welders can be AC, DC or AC/DC. The type you will need is dictated by what you plan to weld and the power you require. An AC stick welder  is suitable for welding aluminium or jobs requiring less power, for example, DIY jobs. On the other hand, a DC stick welder is more suitable for jobs needing more power. For more versatility, AC/DC stick welders will give a professional welder more flexibility to complete heavier industrial jobs.
