Top FAQs About 30 / 70 Beer Gas
What is 30/70 beer gas?
It is a blend of 30% carbon dioxide (CO2) and 70% nitrogen (N2) specifically formulated for dispensing certain types of beer. The higher nitrogen content results in a tight, creamy head with small bubbles and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.
What types of beer is 30/70 gas used for?
This gas mix is primarily used for dispensing stouts (like Guinness), bitters, and other traditional ales that benefit from a less carbonated, creamy texture and the characteristic “cascading” pour.
What are the benefits of using a 30/70 gas blend?
- Creamy Texture: The high nitrogen content creates a smoother, more velvety mouth-feel
- Stable Head: It helps produce a long-lasting, dense, and visually appealing foam head
- Reduced Carbonation: Prevents the beer from becoming overly fizzy
- Characteristic Pour: Enables the iconic cascading effect seen in stouts
- Maintains Flavor: The balanced CO2 level ensures the beer retains its intended flavor profile without becoming flatCan I use 30/70 gas for lagers or other beers?
Generally, no. Lagers and most other beers require a higher level of carbonation, which is typically achieved with 100% CO2 or a gas blend with a higher CO2 ratio (e.g., 60/40). Using a 30/70 mix on these beers will likely result in a flat and lifeless pour.
What cylinder sizes are available for 30/70 beer gas?
Commonly available sizes include 2L, 4.2L, 10L, 20L, and 50L cylinders, catering to different usage volumes.
Is 30/70 beer gas rent-free?
Yes, the cylinders are rent-free, offering a cost-effective solution by eliminating ongoing rental charges. However, a deposit is required for the initial cylinder, which is included in the price.
How do I connect a 30/70 gas cylinder to my dispensing system?
Connecting a gas cylinder involves attaching a compatible regulator to the cylinder valve using a spanner and ensuring a tight seal. The regulator controls the pressure of the gas being supplied to the keg. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific regulator and cylinder type and ensure the correct connections are used.
What safety precautions should I take when using 30/70 beer gas?
- Store cylinders in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and flammable materials
- Keep cylinders upright and secure to prevent them from falling
- Ensure the valve is closed and the cap is on when the cylinder is not in use
- Handle cylinders with care and avoid dropping or rolling them
- Use the correct regulator and ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks
- Only trained personnel should handle and connect gas cylinders
What is the shelf life of a 30/70 beer gas cylinder?
When stored correctly in a cool and dry environment, beer gas cylinders can typically last for 3 to 6 months after purchase. It’s important to check for any expiry dates provided by the supplier. Using expired gas might result in flat beer.
What pressure should I set my regulator to for 30/70 beer gas?
The ideal regulator pressure depends on factors like the beer temperature and the length of your beer lines. Generally, for ales and lagers using a mixed gas (though 30/70 is for stouts/bitters), the pressure range is often between 20-25 PSI. For stouts using a 30/70 mix, it might be slightly higher, around 30-40 PSI, to achieve the desired flow and cascading effect. It’s best to consult the specific recommendations for the beer you are dispensing and potentially a carbonation chart.
