Applications
Our Propylene Gas cylinders are ideal for a variety of applications, including:
1. Production of Polypropylene:
- The most significant use of propylene is as a raw material in the production of polypropylene, a versatile thermoplastic polymer
- Packaging films and containers
- Fibers for carpets, textiles, and upholstery
- Molded plastic parts for appliances, automotive components, housewares, and medical devices
- Bottles, caps, and closures
- Outdoor furniture
2. Production of Other Chemicals:
- Propylene is a crucial building block for numerous other important chemicals, including:
- Propylene Oxide: Used in the production of polyurethane foams for furniture, automotive parts, boats, appliances, solvents, and resins
- Acrylonitrile: Used to make acrylic fibers for clothing and carpets, as well as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic found in many consumer electronics and automotive parts
- Cumene: An intermediate in the production of phenol and acetone, which are used in wood adhesives, coatings, medical equipment, and more
- Acrylic Acid: Used to make superabsorbent polymers found in diapers and sanitary napkins, as well as surface coatings and adhesives
- Isopropyl Alcohol (Propan-2-ol): A common solvent and disinfectant
3. Fuel Gas:
- Propylene gas is used as an alternative fuel to acetylene in oxy-fuel welding, cutting, brazing, and metal heating processes
- It offers advantages such as:
- Higher heat output than propane
- Cleaner burning compared to acetylene (less soot production)
- Greater safety due to lower volatility and higher operating pressure limits compared to acetylene
- Potentially longer cylinder life and reduced labor costs for cylinder changes
4. Other Industrial Uses:
- Refrigerant (R-1270): In some specific applications, propylene is used as a refrigerant due to its low environmental impact
- Heat Transfer Medium: Industrial-grade propylene glycol (derived from propylene oxide) is used as a heat transfer fluid
- Wastewater Treatment: Propylene has some applications in wastewater treatment processes.

Top FAQs About Propylene Gas
What are the main applications of propylene gas?
Propylene gas is primarily used for high-temperature heating, brazing, soldering, plumbing, automotive repairs, and various industrial heating applications.
What are the advantages of using propylene gas compared to other fuel gases like propane or acetylene?
Propylene typically produces a hotter flame than propane, leading to faster heating and potentially more efficient work. While acetylene burns hotter still, propylene offers a safer and often more cost-effective alternative for many applications.
What cylinder sizes are available for rent-free propylene gas, and how do I choose the right size?
Common sizes include 2L, 10L, and 20L. The best size depends on your usage frequency and the portability you require. Smaller cylinders are easier to transport, while larger ones provide a greater volume for extended use.
Is propylene gas safe to use? What safety precautions should I take?
Propylene gas is flammable and should be handled with care. Always use in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames and ignition sources. Ensure proper connections to regulators and torches, and store cylinders upright and securely. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for detailed safety guidelines.
What type of regulator and torch do I need for a propylene gas cylinder?
You will need a regulator designed for use with propylene gas. Ensure it has the correct CGA (Compressed Gas Association) connection for the cylinder valve. Similarly, use torches specifically designed or compatible with propylene. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for both the regulator and torch.
How do I know when my propylene gas cylinder is empty and how do I get a refill? The cylinder pressure will decrease as the gas is used. To get a refill, you exchange your empty cylinder for a full one at a designated supplier or distributor.
How should I store my propylene gas cylinder when not in use?
Store propylene cylinders in a well-ventilated, dry area, away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and flammable materials. Keep them upright and secured to prevent tipping.
Can I use a propylene gas cylinder for applications other than those listed?
While propylene is commonly used for heating and metal joining, it may have other industrial applications. Always consult the product specifications and safety data sheet to ensure it is suitable and safe for your intended use. If in doubt, contact us.
