Top FAQs About 60 / 40 Beer Gas
What is 60/40 beer gas?
It is a blended gas mixture consisting of 60% carbon dioxide (CO2) and 40% nitrogen (N2), specifically formulated for dispensing certain types of beverages.
What types of drinks is 60/40 beer gas best suited for?
This blend is ideal for highly carbonated lagers and ciders. The higher CO2 content helps maintain their desired level of fizz, while the nitrogen provides a smoother pour and improved head retention. It is also sometimes used for craft lagers and pale ales.
What are the benefits of using a 60/40 gas blend?
- Optimal Carbonation: Maintains the correct carbonation level for lagers and ciders, preventing them from becoming flat or over-carbonated
- Improved Head Retention: The nitrogen component contributes to a longer-lasting and more visually appealing head
- Smoother Pour: Nitrogen creates smaller bubbles, resulting in a smoother, more consistent pour
- Balanced Mouthfeel: Provides a balanced level of carbonation and smoothness, enhancing the drinking experience
How does 60/40 gas differ from other beer gas blends like 70/30 or 50/50?
- 70/30 (Nitrogen/CO2): Higher nitrogen content, primarily used for stouts and ales where a creamy texture and tight head are desired with lower carbonation
- 50/50 (Nitrogen/CO2): A more balanced mix often used for regular ales and lagers, offering a compromise between carbonation and smoothness
- 100% CO2: Used for highly carbonated drinks like some lagers, ciders, and soft drinks, but can lead to a more aggressive carbonation and less head retention compared to blends with nitrogen
Will using 60/40 gas affect the taste of my lagers or ciders?
When used correctly for the intended beverages (highly carbonated lagers and ciders), 60/40 gas should enhance the drinking experience by providing the right level of carbonation without overdoing it. Using the wrong gas blend can negatively impact the taste and texture over time.
What are the different cylinder sizes available for 60/40 beer gas, and which one should I choose?
Common sizes include 2L, 4.2L, 10L, 20L, and 50L. The best size depends on your usage volume and storage capacity. Smaller sizes are suitable for home bars or low-volume venues, while larger sizes are more economical for high-demand establishments.
What does “rent-free” mean in the context of these gas cylinders?
“Rent-free” means you purchase the cylinder outright (paying a deposit which is refundable upon return of the empty cylinder) and only pay for the gas refills. This eliminates the recurring monthly or annual rental fees associated with traditional gas cylinder contracts, potentially offering long-term cost savings, especially for users with lower gas consumption.
How should I store and handle 60/40 beer gas cylinders safely?
- Always store cylinders upright, whether full or empty, and secure them to a wall or in a cylinder trolley or stand to prevent them from falling over
- Store in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources, open flames, and electrical equipment. Ideally, maintain a cool “cellar temperature” (below 12°C).
- Never drop, roll, or drag cylinders. Use appropriate handling equipment.
- Ensure the valve is protected from damage.
- Only trained personnel should handle gas cylinders.
- Keep full and empty cylinders separate
How long will a cylinder of 60/40 beer gas last?
The lifespan of a cylinder depends on the size and the volume of beverages dispensed. For example, a 2L cylinder might dispense around 22 gallons of product, while a 50L cylinder will dispense significantly more. Usage will vary based on pour size, frequency, and system efficiency.
Is 60/40 beer gas more cost-effective than other options?
The cost-effectiveness depends on your usage patterns. Rent-free cylinders can be more economical in the long run if your gas consumption is not extremely high (no more than 1 per month), as you avoid continuous rental fees. Comparing the price of gas refills across different suppliers and cylinder sizes is crucial for determining the most cost-effective solution for your specific needs.
